Customers care about their needs, not about your risks.

I read this:

“I would like to leave a body of work that I’m proud of because I stand for cinema that’s different. I want the audiences to always think that I took the risk.’

– Ayushman Khurrana, Actor.

I admire Ayushman for his unconventional but highly remarkable work. No doubt about his talent and his deserving the accolades which come with the work. I think he is from that rare breed of actors who are also intelligent along with being talented and/or lucky.

But I think while watching a movie, the audience never thinks that an actor has taken a risk by taking up a certain role. The audience is there to seek entertainment. They don’t pay and come to evaluate your strategy or logic behind the film. They are only concerned about the product and its value for them.

In a business also, customers do not sympathize if you are taking a risk by investing too much or by leveraging your assets or by entering a market in spite of an uncertainty. They are looking for a solution to their problem, satisfaction of their needs.

Once that is assured, they may prefer you if your brand is associated with a larger, noble purpose. But, fundamentally, their need must be satisfied.

Markets have no place for virtues or idealism.

They are too ruthless for niceties. It helps to accept this bitter reality.
