How Hungry Are You To Learn?

Successful entrepreneurs are hungry. They are hungry to grow. They are hungry to improve and learn new things.

I listened to Harsh Mariwala, the Founder and Chairman of Marico Ltd talking about the initial days of Marico.

In those days, the company used to sell Parachute coconut oil in bulk packs to retailers. The retailers then sold it in loose packs. Its better quality fetched a higher price than others. So, they decided to brand it. Eventually, that led to the creation of the famous consumer brand Parachute. But how did it all start?

Mr Mariwala said he did not have a management education behind him. He did not know much about marketing. So, he sought help from a marketing consultant. The consultant lived in Ahmedabad and he said he could meet Mr Mariwala only at night because he was busy during the day.

Desperate to learn, Mr Mariwala took an evening flight to Ahmedabad from Mumbai. He discussed his marketing issues with the consultant during the night, learned from him and returned to Mumbai in the morning. This he did multiple times during that period.

Mr Mariwala says, “That hunger for improving, knowing from others, and learning has played a very very important role in my journey. And that’s how I’ve learned everything from the bottom up.”

Continuous learning has been an important part of many of the success stories of immensely successful entrepreneurs.

The business landscape is always changing. It poses newer challenges all the time. A business leader has to update himself to cope with these challenges constantly. In today’s times, continuous learning is not optional for business success.
