A few months back, a TVC of Kalyan Jewellers featuring Amitabh Bachchan and his daughter Shweta Nanda was quickly discontinued due to protests from the government bank employees’ unions. The ad demonstrated poor quality of service at a government bank.
Yes, it was disliked by some because it depicted the truth, bitter truth prevailing in most of the Indian government owned companies. It reflected the poor attitude and work ethics of the majority of the employees of banks, post, railways or other enterprises owned and run by the government.
Most of these employees lack discipline and concern for others.
They don’t have customer focus. They treat the customers rudely.
They provide poor service and do the bare minimum of their job because they don’t have any threat to their employment. They don’t value their commitment to service.
The government organizations suffer from poor leadership. Bosses there are powerless, because the lower rank employees are unionized.
They are arrogant and indisciplined.
Their associations and unions have nurtured and encouraged their inefficiency. The unions come into picture only when they want to put forward their demands which ussually are about getting more salary, more leaves and doing less work. These leaders never come forward to teach their members to do their duty honestly and sincerely.
In this case also, the associations have protested, because truth hurts. They can’t tolerate truth. A country can progress only if its people’s work ethics improve. In India, a Sarkari naukri, a job with minimum work is most sought after, a dream come true. If India has to progress, such indiscipline and poor work ethics have to end.
Instead of curbing the realistic depiction of the poor service standards, the unions must inspire their members to do some real good work and provide better service. That will help the employees and the public more than protesting on trivial issues and striking work. And, any union that does not promise improvement in the quality of service must be banned.
